Backups that actually run

The value of a backup is entirely in whether it worked. Most people find out at the worst moment.

Signs you need this

  • A backup drive that has not been plugged in for months
  • Not being sure whether anything is being backed up at all
  • Backups that depend on someone remembering to start them
  • Everything on one computer and nowhere else
  • A business where the only copy of the books is on one machine

What the work involves

A backup that needs a human to remember it is not a backup, it is an intention. The setup that survives is the one that runs by itself and tells you when it does not.

The work is deciding what actually needs protecting, choosing where it goes (a local drive is fast to restore from, an off-site copy survives a fire or a theft, and most people want both), and setting it to run without anyone thinking about it.

Then it gets checked. A backup nobody has ever restored from is a guess. Confirming that files can actually come back is the part that makes the rest worth having.

This is usually a remote job once any drive is physically connected.

In short

Every day people accidentally delete files, let us setup a backup solution that will prevent these issues, and know even with the worst case scenario, they can be recovered.

Common questions

Isn't cloud storage already a backup?
Not by itself. File sync copies changes, including deletions and encryption from ransomware, to every copy. It is useful, but it is not the same as a backup you can go back in time with.
How often should it run?
The question to answer first is how much work you could stand to redo. An hour, a day, a week: that answer sets the schedule, not the other way round.
