Anything that lets you reach your office from outside can, if it is set up carelessly, let other people reach it too, and systems opened straight to the internet get found automatically, not by someone taking an interest in you specifically.
Doing it properly means the connection is encrypted, access is tied to accounts that can be turned off when someone leaves, and only the things that need to be reachable are reachable.
The right shape depends on what you are doing. Reaching one machine occasionally is a different setup from joining two offices together permanently.

- No, and the shared name causes a lot of confusion. Consumer VPN services route your browsing through someone else's servers. This is about connecting you to your own network.
- Is remote access safe?
- Set up properly, yes. It is how a great many businesses work. Set up carelessly it is one of the more common ways they get compromised, which is the whole reason to be deliberate about it.
